"I thought running was only for skinny people!" The couch potato realized it was time to get off the sofa and run... no more waiting for skinny, there were no more excuses.Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.comBlogger137125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-59469840832413487462013-10-24T20:16:00.001-04:002013-10-24T20:16:59.122-04:00Holy crap I did a half marathon!I haven't posted in since April so I think my two faithful followers have even grown bored of waiting for new posts LOL

As the title implies, I ran a half marathon on September 22nd.

I did not train even close to enough to accomplish the goal of using the Army Half as my "practice run" for the Disney Half. Yes, I'm registered. I have a scared.

So my running partner Vicky and I did finish. I think our finish times hovered around 4 hours and 5 minutes. We need to complete the Disney Half in LESS THAN 3.5 HOURS. I did not hit caps lock by mistake. I have a scared. I was only in pain for one solid day and sore for the 2nd day. Not bad considering my lack of skillz :P

November 1st the whole 80s training montage complete with Eye of the Tiger will begin playing in the background.

On a happy yet tired note. I did not train enough because since April/May we (read I) worked really hard to prep our townhouse for sale. We put it on the market finally on Sept 1st and it was sold by September 24th.. Yeah, that's right, in the midst of the Army Run pre race nerves and post-race pain.

We also got the keys to our new house (single detached place) a mere 2.5 weeks later. I have since been driving back and forth, cleaning and moving stuff until I'm dreaming of it.

Stay tuned folks... there posts are few and far between these days, but it will get better when my office is set-up again.

I'm also considering starting a home decorating blog... for all the before and after pictures of this old 80's house.Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-38425374676194447612013-04-19T09:17:00.000-04:002013-04-19T09:17:04.087-04:002 month-a-versaryIt's been a long time since I updated my blog! Times were rough and I lost my mojo.

I was bummed that I hadn't consistently lost weight in the 2 years at Weight Watchers. I did really well the first 6 months I was there, got to my 5% goal and then was about 4 pounds away from my 10% goal and then my weight crept back up to it's original spot in the 240's over the next year and a half, seems I like to sit in the 240's for some reason.

I've always felt that my body needed extreme amounts of exercise to create the burn to continue loosing weight consistently. To others that amount of exercise may seem like easy peasy, but to me if felt like I always had to be "on": always moving, always tracking food, always thinking about strategies to get more movement in etc etc and all that seemed overwhelming and exhausting not to mention always feeling various sore muscles and being constantly tired. It's just easier to lay on the couch... right?

Well in my last post in November 2012 I mention buying a weight bench and mapping out a bodybuilding plan and just needing to clean out a spare room to make room for said endeavor. Didn't happen until last week. I put the pro in procrastinate! What prompted me to do this big change seemingly out of the blue? It wasn't exactly out of the blue, but let me give you a bit of background.

In January, after the holiday eat-extravaganza was done and my weight was back up to 246 and 250 was looming on the horizon, I was talking with some friends about needing some mojo. My friend Vicky brought up the Princess Half Marathon in Disney saying that she wants to run it and thought that if we started training in February 2013, we should be ready for the race in February 2014. We decided that the Princess run could be our new lofty goal and that we could indeed train for it within a year. We also decided to start doing video logs every Sunday (or so time permitting) to discuss our progress, our mountains, our molehills etc etc. Those recordings are still being edited and I'll post the link to our joint website sometime in early June (we hope).

So thus began a new round of seemingly lofty ambitions and goals. Apparently I decided to pull up my big girl panties and just get er done. Monday February 18th I decided that I would begin a running program where I would get up at 4am every morning and run before work (Monday to Friday). I slowly built up the distance as the weeks went by. I think I started with 2km per day and added 0.5km per day the following week, then another 0.5km the next week... to the point where by the last week of March I was running 4km each morning. I couldn't believe at that point that I was still doing it. It felt good, I was feeling tired, exhausted and sore, but I also kept thinking about the 10km race in May, how I wanted to do better than last year, but even more so I was thinking about the pacing requirements for the Princess Run: 9.32 min /km!!!

Nose to the grindstone, keep working is the motto. The first Sunday in April (7th) I started adding a longer slower run like most 10km or 1/2 marathon schedules have in their repertoire. I ran 5km on the 7th and I ran 6km last Sunday. This Sunday is 7km. Should make it to 10km by the beginning of May, just in time for the 10km race.

So while all this awesome running is going on, I'm not really loosing much weight, but I figure it'll come off eventually.... right? Well I went up a bit two weeks in a row, got bummed out and was going to eat a skid full of chips and decided it was probably muscle gain. I googled and everything I read said that it was probably water retention because of muscle gain/strain and that at the beginning of any ambitious program it can and will probably happen. I took out my measuring tape and low and behold, several inches smaller than my last measurement session.

Chip skid disaster avoided... let's forge on! Also in my research it was recommended to incorporate body building and core exercises to support the back... yeah my back really hurt, not lower back, but the top of the ribs type of pain. So hence the re-org of the spare room and the assemblage of the bench happened on April 13th.

This past week I've run my 4km each morning with a rest day on Wednesday so I can run the long run on Sunday PLUS I've done body building on Monday/Wednesday and Core work on Tuesday/Thursday. The weight is melting off more in this week than in the last 7 weeks. Is it the body building? Is it the extra attention to diet? Is it just my body finally getting the metabolism ramped up to the right amount? WHO CARES!!! Either way it's great and I hope that the 4am run thing someday becomes an ingrained habit because at this point, it's well past the 21 days of habit mythology and it's still tough, but so very worth it!!
The house is looking much better and the areas that look a bit chaotic are like that while organizing other stuff :)

During a fun time at a Stitch and Bitch at Alex's place with Vicky, we talked about things that work for us and I brought up how I feel that weekends are my weakest point. I do very well during the week because of the structure and then the whole thing goes to shit when that bell rings and the end of the day on Friday.

So this last weekend I decided to try adding more structure by making a schedule. I wrote down a schedule making sure I included meals, vitamins and approximate times. I set my alarm and I woke up at 8am on Saturday and 9:30 am on Sunday. A little bit of a sleep in, but not too overboard. I made a lot of progress on the cleaning/organizing of the house. By the end of the weekend, my weight had still gone up a bit, but I'd like to think that it's a work in progress.

The most important part of the weekend was that I went back to my Weight Watchers meeting for the first time since August. It was the 9:15 meeting, I used to go to the 12:15 meeting, and I remember the 9:15 was really busy, boy that hasn't changed!

It was traumatizing! It was chaos! People everywhere, all sorts of lines as they tried to set up a new system and worst of all, my file was "retired" to the archives section. Basically I've been gone so long it's like I've never existed to them... even if I still paid for those 3 months I missed. Oh well, starting from scratch is what I need.

This weekend the new plan will be revealed, but I think it's already been revealed online. Looks good. I like the website re-vamp and it seems a bit easier to use.

More changes and progress to come from me, so stay tuned!
But supplies running out...I got two refills of inject-able Iron on Wednesday, but the Pharmacist pulled me aside to tell me that they expire on September 1st 2012. So I have to use them up fairly quick-like otherwise they seem to think various body parts will fall off... or something equally horrible. I'm running pretty low (or at least it really feels that way) so I reassured the pharmacist that I would take both dosages a week apart and that should be OK since I haven't had any for over a year. He didn't seem worried... just walked away nodding. How reassuring!

The fact that they sent me soon to be expired medication leads me to believe that this pharmacy will most likely run out of injectable iron as well. FRIG!

*stomps feet*
*holds breath*
*temper tantrum on the floor*

*sigh*

Ok, that didn't resolve anything, but the whining about it helps ME feel better LOL

I'll worry about the lack or iron in another month or so when I try and get more, but I know it's going to be a big pain in the butt :(

I need ideas for my Zombie costume for the upcoming Zombie race... I'm drawing a blank... must need iron... there's iron in brains right? BRAIIIINS! *stumble, stumble, shuffle, shuffle*Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-41144367226615376752012-08-03T15:22:00.000-04:002012-08-03T15:23:01.913-04:00Ironing out the details...I saw my family doctor (finally!) for a physical after almost 3 years. Yeah, they are supposed to be yearly, however her office has a weird system wherein you have to phone every morning after 8:30 and see if she has any open spots... regardless of what the issue, or non-issue until you can get an appointment. In my previous job is was difficult to get an appointment, not because my boss would want more notice (she was aware of the difficulties), but because it was difficult for me to remember or have the free time to call at 8:30. I start work at 7:30, therefore by 8:30 my day is in full swing and I'm not thinking of physicals.

Apparently time flies, and while time was flying I did nothing to rectify my lack of follow up for a yearly physical. I'm not on any meds really, and the one prescription I have for inject-able Iron was still valid... or so I thought. I mentioned in a previous post that I'm starting to feel run down and tired all the time... again which is an indication that I should gear up and start taking iron regularly again. So I went to my pharmacy and their one supplier was closed down and the other was out of stock... so I needed a new prescription and a alternative to the first iron prescribed.

For some reason I believed bringing up my iron levels would let me coast for several more years without having issues... DUH!!! I'm not usually that stupid, but this is a mix of stupid, procrastination and time really does fly! I seriously thought it had only been a year and change, possibly close to 2 years... not close to 3 years!!! So super bad me! *SPANK* Part of the procrastination is due to the fact that giving myself these injections always produces a really ugly looking blotch on my leg that looks like a bruise... vanity can lead women to do stupid things... I am living proof!

In the end I did see my family doc, all is well except for the tired part (it's already tough to get out for run in the best of conditions, never mind low iron me) she poked, she prodded and she pronounced me good to go with a new prescription for Iron with the warning that I might have to change pharmacies if my current one's suppliers still couldn't fill it. After work yesterday I went to my pharmacy: no iron available for the foreseeable future. I almost cried, I was stuck in traffic for 40 mins to get there, plus low iron me is extra emotional. I went home, ate some pizza and resolved to call around to every pharmacy if needed to get some iron. So today before calling everyone in the world, I went to the pharmacy in the mall attached to my work building and success! They will have some iron as soon as next week. YAY! and PHEW!

While I wait for iron, I get to enjoy a long weekend of cleaning and hopefully some walks/runs and some crafting thrown in for good measure.Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-62823592737385415422012-07-23T11:55:00.001-04:002012-07-23T11:55:51.532-04:00My poor neglected blog!I haven't posted here in forever! *If* anyone is still reading this... I apologize for the absence. I guess I just didn't have anything to say or didn't feel like saying it here.

Let's see... since my last post at the beginning of May what's new?

- In mid-May I changed jobs @ work. Still work in the same branch, just a
different division and a more technical type job. Going from reporting
on IT outages to working in a group that does mainframe support. It's a
steep learning curve, but I'm really enjoying all this new stuff to
learn :)

- I ran the 10km on May 26th right at the end of being off for a week with bronchitis. Finish time 1:46:06, which considering I was only able to actually run the first 5km and hobble, speedwalk and cough my way across the finish after the last 5km, I'm not gonna complain. Just kept telling myself that all I wanted was to finish under 2 hours before they closed the race... and I did it. Next year I should be able to beat that time no problemo!!

- On June 23rd I ran 8km Perth Kilt Run. I felt much better than when I did the 10km in May, but I still hadn't pumped up my mileage enough to be my usual Speedy Gonzales (HA!) so I finished with a decent time of 1:25.

- In July I don't have any races and there are none in August either so I'm taking advantage of this time to try and switch up my diet to remove as many carbs as possible without making myself insane (white carbs mostly like sugar, flour, rice & pasta) It's been a week and so far I haven't assaulted anyone... stay tuned :D

Upcoming races:
- 5km on Saturday September 22nd - Zombie run in Orillia Ontario
- 5km on Sunday September 23rd - Army Run in Ottawa Ontario
- 5km on Sunday September 30th - Run for the Cure (Breast Cancer Awareness)
- 5km or 10km (undecided) on Sunday October 21st - Rattle me Bones Halloween RunKandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-75758248430792176412012-05-07T19:58:00.000-04:002012-05-07T19:58:07.523-04:00I'm not Iron Man!I'm not referring to the sporting event, cause ya know i'm not ready for that kind of level of fitness!

I'm referring to the lack of iron in my body... so tired all the time.

I have done almost no training since beginning of March, but tonight I did 4km.

I'm ordering some iron and be damned splotchy legs, I can't have it all obviously :(

I'm not strong, but I'm not gone!Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-6904366820927432712012-02-20T21:22:00.002-05:002012-02-20T21:22:58.429-05:00Aaaaaaand 2012 race season begins! The 30 for 30 challenge ended shortly after the holidays and I think all said and told it went well. I came back from Xmas vacation and had actually lost weight. However, having a few days off before going back to work and being exhausted from a 12 hr drive I convinced myself I "deserved" some time off and some time to "eat whatever I wanted" double whammy kiss of death. I feel off the wagon hard, got stuck in a puddle of mud and wallowed there for awhile.

When I finally awoke from my calorie induced coma, I decided it was the usual: not really worth it in the long run and I can't really live that way full time. I am going to have to weigh and measure everything I eat for the rest of my natural life. Once they jar my head in pickle brine I can hit the chocolate croissants, but until then I have to try and live the Weight Watcher lifestyle as much as possible. It's not to say that I won't fall off the wagon again, but I plan to jog behind it and not loose it from sight. Man, I sound like a broken record. It's the definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

So to avoid being defined as "insane" I decided to take a leap. No, not a leap off a bridge LOL I was never that depressed about some weight re-gain. Bummed and resigned was more the state of mind. What I did to kick things up a notch was to sign up for a race... a 10km race! *gulp* I need to focus on training for something again and since I've run 5km races for the last 2 years I decided that 10km was not only a challenge that I was ready for but a challenge that would help me with my weight loss and my running speed.

It stands to reason that more training mileage (from 15km a week to 40km a week) will burn more calories, which will make me loose weight, which will hopefully also help me speed up. That's my theory anyway :)

Stay tuned!
I missed 2 days due to stomach/intestinal issues and I think it's related to a new protein I switched too in October. Apparently even vegetarians try to avoid Soy protein powders! After doing some research on it, I think that I'm one of those people that has issues with soy. I've been sick a few times with cramps, bloating, incredible fluctuations in weight and I think it's probably the soy. T'is the season of Christmas eating, however weight watchers let's you indulge within your weekly flex points, plus I've been exercising... not tons, but I've been moving.

So I'll have to take a break from the protein and maybe after a week make my whey back to my tried and true whey isolate protein. It's just whey better for my tummy... hahaha pun totally intended... ok somebody stop me LOL

On Wednesday the 21st, I'm driving off to the east coast to visit my family (12 hour drive!) and I know it's going to be a great time... a good 5km walk everyday with my Dad and my sister will be a great equalizer during the holiday eating...

Come on vacation!Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-22152618081117359582011-12-07T07:57:00.001-05:002011-12-07T08:02:43.519-05:0030/30 updateIt's been a week so far in the 30 minutes of working out for 30 days. I'm pleased at how it's working out and how even on the days when we have social activities I am able to squeeze it in.

That being said; today everything hurts and I want to go back to bed...... I think some advil and an early bedtime tonight might help :)

My friend Patti asked me last night if my next challenge would be 60 minutes for 60 days...my answer was a loud groan and shaking of the head LOL I think I would gladly repeat 30/30 and just gradually increase the workouts for 5 minutes or something.. but 60 minutes everyday??? I'm not there yet!Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-86526906760199270372011-12-05T12:36:00.001-05:002011-12-05T13:34:21.920-05:0030 minutes for 30 daysAs a concerted effort to get off my ass and focus on movement and avoid scope creep, I decided to trick myself into getting things moving again. I figured that I can easily walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes a day... and if I happen to walk longer, or even go crazy and break out into a running pace, well that's just gravy... mmmmm gravy :) *ahem*

I started out on November 30th and so far I have been able to get in the 30 minutes per day. This time of year is really busy with social activities outside the house, social activities at our house, baking, shopping etc etc, you get the picture right? That being said, I think this 30/30 program is well timed and working out quite well. To be accountable, I posted on facebook and several friends pledged to try doing something similar as well. So far myself and Vicky seem to be the only people posting everyday, so I don't know how others are doing.

An added benefit that I did not foresee at all, much like getting T-boned at a 4 way stop, was me lifting weights all of a sudden.... well it wasn't that sudden like the barbell appeared in my hand like by magic... helloo Harry Potter. Nope, it was more like I was surfing Pintrest (www.pintrest.com which is like bookmarking on speed) pinning some really gooey looking recipes and also seeing some fitness bloggers link and thinking: "hmmm that would be a good idea for the 30/30" before you know it I had printed off a bunch of magazine scans that fitness bloggers seem to love posting and that very evening, whilst watching a movie I did some bicep curls, some shoulder presses, the obligatory tricep kickbacks (bat wings people! I could fly to Japan) and a few deadlifts, but what really got me excited was a standing ab exercise routine that is done with weights. I interspersed the lifting with some cardio like squats, high kicks, knee lifts and shadow boxing. I was shocked that I really enjoyed that little routine.

I mean, I've done my share of crunches over time, but they always feel pointless to me since there is still a large layer of fat hiding them. That standing ab routine, did make me feel like it was making a difference under all that stuff, so I think I'll be doing it more often. Follow this link to see the workout:

I'm also very tempted to buy a freestanding punching bag, but the reviews aren't great so far.... they keep saying they leak air... I guess inflatable is not the way to go, too bad because I can see it as being more convenient to move around... and you wouldn't have to hang it from the ceiling. Besides I shouldn't be buying myself gifts before Christmas.Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-920329178538637242011-11-29T14:59:00.001-05:002011-11-29T15:19:52.447-05:00Scope creepI'm not a project manager or anything, but there are elements of my job that incorporate the philosopies of project management. So this week when I was thinking of finally getting back to my blog, updating it with the last race, my last weigh-ins and basically getting on track, I realized that I have begun to scope creep.

Usually there is a bit of focus lost for an event or the holidays, but I usually get back to my routine fairly quick (even if I whine about it) but I feel much better once I'm back on track and somewhat sticking to a routine. For the past few weeks (almost a month) I feel like I'm suffering for major scope creep. The focus of my efforts and intentions seem to have shifted to crafting, cooking and laying around in my pajama's... I've become a pajama mama.

So needless to say I need to re-focus like a laser and get back on the treadmill. Fixing the media box near the treadmill is a step in the right direction because I just can't handle being on the treadmill without being able to watch something on TV. I could listen to music, but then my eyes would get bored.. yanno?

Vicky (my leperchaun friend) and I have tried to run the 10km schedule, but neither of us seem to be able to focus.... so i'm thinking of focusing on movement for movement's sake and not worrying about kms. I think i'm going to suggest that we do 30 minutes per day of movement for 30 days. It can be running, it can be weights, it can be boxing, whatever! I'll ask her to see how she feels... but i'm up for 30 for 30.

Run for the Cure on October 2nd:

My friend Vicky and I decided to sign up for the Run for the Cure to support breast cancer research. Not because we're all charity like and stuff like that, but mainly because a lot of people wear pink (like the pink ribbons) and other cool costumes and we didn't want to miss a chance to wear pink while running. We went shopping awhile back and bought the stuff to make pink Tutus... and on the same trip while hopped up on Starbucks and chocolate, we bought tiaras to go along with the big pink floofy tutus. Vicky finished the race in 45 mins and I trailed in behind her at 45:15. Pretty decent time for me since 45 seems to be my magic number and Vicky was nice enough to keep me company for the majority of the race.
Cheap kitchen reno for 700 bucks:

My Mom and Sister were coming up after the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend (11th) so I decided to reno my kitchen for the few frantic weeks leading up to their visit. Every waking moment not spent at work was mostly spent painting, cleaning, glueing or crafting something or other. I spent 60 bucks on a can of Smart 3 paint, about 15 bucks on podge, 35 bucks on fancy paper and about 500 bucks on Smart tiles for the back splash. The tiles weren't cheap, but they didn't end up looking cheap either. That's the part of the kitchen I got the most compliments on.
It's a great 5km race that follows the exact same route as the May race weekend, so very familiar and comfortable. I know where to park, I know where to drop off my backpack, and at 7:30 am on a Sunday, it's good to instinctively know where the hell you're going :)

The 5km race sold out this year, and you could tell, as the place was jam packed with people. During the race itself, I felt rusty and cranky, but determined to crank out my 5km without too much whimpering LOL I didn't wear my Garmin because for some silly reason I figured if I knew how fast (or slow) I was going, it would mess me up... I'm starting to think that I should *always* wear my Garmin to help boot me in the ass!

I'd hung out with friends the night before and ate pizza and cake.... I figured it wouldn't be an issue since it's the day before right??? mmmm Nope, probably not... that's probably what made me feel slow and rusty, oh well, leasons learned right?

During the race I saw my co-worker Bill run by, not streak by, but passed me pretty quick. So I sped up a bit and grabbed his butt, freaked him out, but they all laughed about it... He said that he was in the zone and that I'd messed with his game, but really it didn't slow him down at all. I should have followed him and his friends because he did really well! He ran the race in 47 last year, so this year he was hoping to beat that time and he ran the race in 39:55, isn't that awesome??? I totally should have held onto his butt and kept running with him hahahah!

After the race I wanted to meet up with some friends for a coffee or breakfast, but couldn't get a hold of anyone, so Starbucks latte in hand I slowly sauntered back to my car while looking for my results online. Thank goodness for the Sportstats app for the Iphone because I got my results before I even made it to the car! Sweet! I'd finished the race in 45:34 and last year was 45:09 so 25 seconds slower due to pizza and cake is still pretty damn decent in my book, especially considering I felt like a slug on a rug and figured I'd probably have run it in 48 mins when I saw the timer over the finish line flash up 52 mins and change...

The race pictures don't seem to be available online yet, but I'll post some as soon as I steal them :P

So another medal for the bling colection, another wicking shirt for the running wardrobe and another runner to talk about running with at work... life is sweet!

Speaking of sweet... my next run is October 2nd (Run for the Cure) to support Breast Cancer Research and Vicky and I will be wearing all pink, tiaras and tutus... those pictures will be epic!Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-58396511174321034482011-09-12T08:36:00.001-04:002011-09-12T08:36:29.615-04:00Fall is my race season this year...It's strange, but I didn't really sign up for many races this year... or so it seemed at first glance

St. Paddy's race on March 12th (ran 5km)
Ottawa race weekend on May 28th (ran 5km)
Perth Kilt run on July 2nd (walked, didn't run)
Ovarian Cancer research walk on September 11th (walked, didn't run)
Army run on September 18th (registered to run 5km)

So out of that list, there are only 3 races... now all of a sudden these are on the calendar too:

CIBC Run for the cure on October 2nd (5km)
Rattle me bones on October 23rd (5km)

Six races is a decent amount... I just didn't expect to reach that number this year because I had told myself that I should register for a race if there is no medal... and of the races I'm registered for 3 of them offer medals or dog tags. I guess I'm making my own medals for the others! It may seem superficial or weird to some that I wanted to register only for bling races, but I like the sense of achievement when I look at the medals hanging together.

One of the great things about the Run for the cure and the Rattle me bones races is that we can dress up: Vicky and I bought yards of tule to make tutus as well as tiaras to wear to the Run for the cure (gotta wear pink!) I mean we couldn't resist the opportunity to get all decked out in pink flouffy stuff and run LOL I totally vetoed the feather boa idea because sweat and feathers don't mix very well.... lot's of sticky pink feathers all over the place is just not the way to run a race! And for the Rattle me Bones race I can wear my skeleton hoodie again, I <3 that hoodie so much and I can't wear it everyday yanno...

On the weigh-in side of things I hit a brick wall by gaining 2.5 pounds this past week, but man that was a good long run! 5 straight weeks of weight loss and then 3 weeks of hovering at 225.5, I mean for me that is totally awesome. I'm used to loosing for 2 weeks and then going straight back up. I view this as a temporary set back, a moment to catch my breath and then launch myself down the slope again :) It's the first time in my life that I'm not phased by a weight gain at all, I think I've proven to myself that I know how to loose, I just need to refocus like a laser beam. Weekends will probably always be my weakness and as they say in those after school specials "knowing is half the battle".

Great weather, great friends, great BBQs and best of all great weigh ins!

I've added a tablespoon of ground flax seed and walnut pieces to my morning yogurt along with the cinnamon. I like the way it tastes and the flax seed and walnut pieces only come up to 2 points which I can afford at this point. hehehe no pun intended

Strangely enough I haven't had salmon since I posted about the 6 secret tips to fat loss :)

I've started running again, the weather cools off nicely in the evenings so i've had a few 2.5km runs. I have a 5km race coming up on September 18th, so I have to haul ass and try and get faster than last year...I was enjoying the heat, but while still being overweight, too much heat + running is not a good plan.

*fingers crossed* for the Army run :)Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-74599012691108231312011-08-03T13:11:00.000-04:002011-08-03T13:11:30.413-04:006 tips to fight fat. Fact or fiction?I read an article recently with 6 tips on how to fight fat. Most of the tips seemed pretty reasonable:

1. Drink water with lemon.
Mix 1/2 lemon with hot water and stevia first thing every morning to cleanse your liver

2. Flax seed.
Grind up flax seed and eat 2 Tablespoons of flax seed every day. Put it in your shakes, salads or over vegetables. Flax seed helps stabilize your blood sugar and will keep you from going on a binge.

3. Eat 10 walnuts a day
Eating walnuts will reduce your insulin and keep fat storage in-line. Studies have shown that eating walnuts as a snack or on salads will keep you fuller longer. Walnuts are rich in Omega-3.

4. Throw a little cinnamon in your ingredients.
Put cinnamon in your coffee or on your oatmeal. Studies show that cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon a day will help with cholesterol and triglycerides.

5. Hot Sauce.
Burn more fat by eating spicy food. Put some cayenne pepper on your soup or vegetables. Hot sauce helps clear insulin out of the blood stream.
Plus, save money on heating bills.

6. Eat Salmon
Eat 3 ounces of salmon and you will receive more than the daily requirement of Vitamin D. Tuna, Sardines and mackerel have almost the same benefits. By having enough Vitamin D in your system will help reduce your belly.

Water: check
Flax seed, I guess I could add it in (depending on point values).
Walnuts, i'm not willing to spend the points on them everyday.
Cinnamon, that's a spice I don't use often, just don't think of it.
Hot sauce, that's another item I don't use often, again not part of my routine.
Salmon: check

After reviewing my answers on how many things from that article that i'm actually doing, I decided to add the two easiest things: Cinnamon & hot sauce.

For a full week I put cinnamon on my yogurt and a few drops of hot sauce on my breakfast sandwich... by my weigh in on Saturday, I'd lost 3 pounds... *virtual cartwheel*

Bottom line, one week can't say for sure either way if it's really the main reason for the weight loss or even helpful, but I'm willing to keep it up for another week or two.. you know, for testing purposes :D
Most around here would say it's too effin' hot @ 30 to 37 celcius (86 to 98 farenheit for my US friends) , but I love 30/90 degree weather, especially since I lost weight.

When I was 320, I would be bathed in sweat at this temperature and not sleep for days without central air... that's me, sweaty and high maintenance :) Now in the 220's/230's I love heat, but still enjoy central air to sleep.... I think i'm prepping for retirement in Arizona or Nevada :)

I don't have any races scheduled until September or October, I decided to not sign up for a race unless there is bling involved (see my high maintenance comment). I have, however, been walking some long distances in lieu of running. I've done a few 8km or 9km walks during the heat. If I were ever to get out of bed early enough to go for a run in the morning before work (Kicks own ass) then I would definitely run over walk with cooler temps.

I figure movement is good, and since I can't move too fast in the heat, I'll move for longer times/distances.

That's it for now... more updates soon... :)Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-1889143853636041692011-07-10T19:04:00.000-04:002011-07-10T19:04:34.204-04:00Perth Kilt Run... well we walked it :)Saturday July 2nd a bunch of us got together in Perth Ontario to walk or run the largest Kilt run (Made Guinness World Records 2 years in a row!)

This all started a few months ago when Alex's friends started talking about running the race. Alex didn't want to run it because of her knee, so she asked me and her other friend Laura if we'd walk the 8km distance with her. We both thought it would be cool to get a "sports kilt" and spend the day with friends.

I'd never been to Perth before, and neither had Alex, but we decided we'd carpool and google map with my Iphone. It's not a really big town, so we drove there, parked where we thought it was close-ish to the race area and it turned out we were right. Asked around and got pointed in the right direction, picked up our kilts and race bibs and found some of Alex's friends shortly after.

I was a bit dismayed at first that my kilt was not like everyone else's. It didn't have the same tartan, it didn't have the belts on the side closure. But then I realized it was way cooler... it had a big strip of velcro to close it, a secret pocket, a crest at the closure that said "Sport Kilt" and best of all, the material was thinner than the main kilt! Turns out, Laura and a bunch of other people had the same kilt, so I was happy I wasn't the only one.

We lined up for the race

and a really loud gun went off... ZOOM, everyone took off and we began to mosey LOL

The walk was fun, but we had one complaint... being so far behind the pack, so far that we couldn't see them, it was difficult for us to know where to go.. the route was loopy and looped back towards the finish line and had us turn off to the right 10 feet before the finish line... what a tease! It was really confusing in areas were there really weren't any volunteers, so I kept turning and asking the golf cart ladies and they seemed to know most of the time. I'm just sayin' a few well placed arrows wouldn't have hurt :)

Now I need to sign up for more races, I haven't run much lately, so I need to get my butt on track again.Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-8098299989323571382011-06-28T09:30:00.000-04:002011-06-28T09:30:55.821-04:00Meat marathons; not condusive to weight loss... go figure!Every year around June 22nd to Jun 26th there is a festival in Ottawa. It's not your typical festival, there are no carnival rides, there are no clowns or performers, there is no cotton candy and other type fairground foods, but there is meat. Ribfest is all about pork ribs, beef ribs, pulled beef brisket, pulled pork sandwiches, whole chickens and even a few chicken wings. They don't sell beverages, some of the kiosks don't even bother with side dishes and there is no seating because all the room is needed for standing in line to get to the carnivorous nirvhana of meat. There are kiosks from all over Canada and the US, some boasting orange juice in their sauce (Go Gators!) some have honey, some from texas taste more like traditional BBQ sauce, but they all slop it on with a small mop and they chop up the cooked pieces with huge cleavers all whilst singing, clagning cow bells and some kiosks will even squeal like piggies when you put money in the tip jar. *SQUEEEEE*

Bottom line is this... I've expanded my bottom line. I didn't need to go everyday, I would have been good with going once but since we went everyday I went in the spirit of living the WW lifestyle and I tracked it all, but going to the Meatfest 5 days in a row is just too much for a body to handle. The real killer was the decimation of my workout schedule to no movement at all. All the time spent in line for the meat, eating the meat and socializing while digesting the meat just took up all the non work time of the day.

I gained 2 pounds, I also gained a few good ideas on how to deal with next year's meat bonanza. I know the obvious answer should be "don't go!" but you just can't live that way... WW is supposed to be a lifestyle, not a diet and if I stop myself from going at all, then that's just not living! The 2 pound gain sucks because it looks like the month of June was a waste of time, but I know that it could be waaaay worse like the 8 pound gain during vacation this spring... EEEEK! *searches for silver lining*

Some good ideas for next year:

Reduce the amount of visits if possible

Bring veggies or eat some in advance (while standing in line) to help fill up

Split a typical serving of whatever with whomever else is willing to share (good luck on that one)

If these other suggestions can't be applied, then find time in the early morning to work out in anticipation

This coming weekend I have the 5 mile/ 8 km Perth kilt run, which I'll be walking with Alex and her friends. I'm excited to finally get my official kilt... wouldn't it be cool if it was too big???

*mental note to bring big safety pins*Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-79985954572203545782011-06-14T15:24:00.000-04:002011-06-14T15:24:58.461-04:00Review: Zumba for the WiiFriday I Zumba'd my butt off like a crazed latin pop star.
Saturday I ran 2kms
Sunday I walked 5kms for the Weight Watchers Walk It Challenge
Monday I spent about 4 hours in the wave pool at our local water park jumping for each wave lest I drown. It was FUN and great exercise, but I was frozen by 1:30. Thankfully the wave pool was heated so that we could enjoy our staycation day even tho it was cloudy/windy/rainy.

Doing well on the hoarding of activity points. Sunshine really helps, would have stayed until 5pm at the wave park *hint, hint* mother nature!

OK, now down to business with the Zumba review. I love doing Zumba, and even moreso when I can do it in the privacy of my home since I feel like a dicombobulated nimcompoop when I first try some of those moves :P

The main differences I can see between doing a Zumba DVD and using the Zumba Wii is that with the Wii you can compete against other players (exercisers) you can play one person against one person or one team against another team.

With the DVD you would be limited to a certain amount of routines you could do (think Jillian's 30 day Shred) whereas with the Wii you can do a 5 minute routine, 20 minute routine, different kinds of music, different kinds of steps. There probably isn't a ton more stuff, but you can mix it up a bit more. As you play more, you also get to "unlock" more locations like the Rooftop. All of the routines start out in the Nightclub.

The downside for me is that it's not a real person on screen, it's sort of a cartoon person, but not really. I prefer seeing real people work out, seems to help me grasp some of the complicated ones faster.

If I can't go to a real class, I like the Wii, but I'd probably enjoy the DVD's as well to be able to see a person for realz :)Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-43707768784977114912011-06-08T12:52:00.000-04:002011-06-08T12:52:55.815-04:00Houston... we had a problemI still haven't played my Wii Zumba game.

Not for lack of wanting to Zumba like a crazed Latin pop star...
Not for lack of getting up off my butt...
Not for lack of changing into workout clothes....

We had technical difficulties.

Our Wii died of a broken heart. After over a year (at my estimate) of not being used I believe our Wii passed away silently during the quiet daytime hours while we were at work. I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but Wii will be missed even though it thought that we didn't love it anymore.

Burial services will be held in the storage room under the stairs this evening. No need to send food or flowers, but a donation to the "Get Carol's ass off the couch" fund would be happily accepted.

Since Nintendo is coming out with a new Wii system, our local gaming store has their refurbished Wii's on sale for 80 dollars plus tax. I now have a Wii in my possession and low and behold I can't use it tonight because we're playing softball, but I'm closer than I was yesterday :)

For the last two evenings while I stood in our living room in my workout gear, Wii remote in hand, tear in my eye and no activity happening, I decided to not let the demise of the Wii stop me from hoarding more activity points.

Monday night I went out and ran 3kms and last night I walked 5kms. I.am.awesome. At least I think so :PKandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-47649263820424400152011-06-05T19:02:00.000-04:002011-06-05T19:02:04.231-04:00Fantastic weigh-in!!! *virtual cartwheel*As I posted mid-week, the sun was shinning and I felt like it was a great week, and it really was!

I accumulated a ridonculous amount of activity points (over 80!) which my WW leader said was too much, but it was an out of the ordinary week with the hours upon hours of volunteering. She did mention that it showed that I probably don't do enough activity on a weekly basis... which I agree with. Running 3 times a week at this point is more like a maintenance amount of activity, so I have to try and get more daily activity.

Good news is that the WII has been moved up to be near my treadmill so I should be able to get in some Zumba time :) Yes I caved to temptation and bought the Zumba game for the WII. Way better than buying a dozen doughnuts don'tcha think? hehehe Besides, the Zumba game was my gift to myself for completing my May 5km race. WOOOHOOO.

Back to the weigh-in, since I feel the need to do more *virtual cartwheels*. I wrote 230.5 on my mirror and 230.5 on my wrist and happily hit my lowest weight this year at 228! That is also 10lbs away from my 10% weight loss (219.6). I have a big freaking smile on my face :) *Fist pump* *devil horns* *virtual cartwheel*

OK, I'll chillax with the celebrating for now :) and get back to work. I can't loose focus now!Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306653462988956847.post-36497984749291817592011-06-02T12:43:00.000-04:002011-06-02T12:43:16.294-04:00To sign up or not to sign up?I wrote a really long post between yesterday and today so I decided to split it up into two :)

I haven't signed up for another 5km running clinic.... it's not that I don't love them, I really do, but I think I'm going to try and continue running at least 3 times per week on my own. I'd like to see if I'm capable of keeping myself on track and most of all I want to save a bit of money. The clinic itself would only cost $49.99, what ends up costing a lot is the gas money to drive to the course location that I like (Merivale/Baseline area) and the traditional Subway supper that I have on that day. Why do I do that you ask? Well there was originally two reasons:

Reason #1, I used to meet with Alex at that location because it was the halfway point between my home and her home.

Reason # 2, I would go straight from work to the Running Room location to save some gas. (see breakdown below)

If I go home after work:
Work to home is 16.9 km
Home to Running Room @ Merivale is 24.6
Running Room to home again 24.6 km = 66.1 km.

If I go straight to the Running room after work:
Work to Running Room 6.5 km
Running Room to home 24.6 km = 31.1 km

Alex and I work within approximately two or three blocks of each other, and the Merivale Running Room is closer to my work than my home. I finish work at 3:30pm, so on the clinic nights, I would just drive to the Running Room location, walk across the street and have Subway for supper and hang out with Alex until our class started at 7:15. The actual run was around 8:00 or 8:15 and we'd run for around 30 to 45 mins dependant on the distance of the day. Then around 9:00 or 9:30 I'd drive home.

After Alex's knee began to complain loudly and she traded her running clinics for intense gym time, I continued to go to the same Running Room location. I really liked the staff and the instructors (Linda is my favorite) and it's still close to my work (6.5 kms). Last week during our last run with Linda, she announced that she won't be teaching for the summer because she's going to be training for herself and taking the 1/2 marathon clinic. Cool for her, sad for me because I think that's yet another reason I didn't have the ambition to sign up for another clinic.

Saving money, not having access to my favorite instructor is enough to make me want me to train on my own for now, but I really should switch to the Orleans Running Room location, since I live in that neighborhood. I'd still have to drive there, but I could eat at home after work. My only fear is that I would get too comfortable at home before needing to head out to class. Once the bra comes off I don't usually leave the house... and y'all should be happy about that!Kandykisseshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13456880140938633631noreply@blogger.com0
